Discover Fayoum: Desert Oasis, Waterfalls & Whale Valley – 2 Days

Two days escaping Cairo into Egypt's most accessible oasis — ancient desert landscapes, the UNESCO-listed Whale Valley fossils, and the waterfalls of Wadi El Rayan.

    2 Days / 1 Nights

    About This Journey

Located southwest of Cairo, Fayoum Oasis offers one of Egypt’s most fascinating landscapes, where ancient history and natural wonders meet within a single region. Once connected to the Nile and inhabited since prehistoric times, the oasis later became an important agricultural and administrative center during the Greco-Roman period. Archaeological sites, desert formations, and fossil fields together reveal layers of human civilization and geological history.

    Day-by-Day Itinerary

Your journey begins in the morning with pickup from your hotel in Cairo or Giza by a private air-conditioned vehicle. The drive travels approximately 112 kilometers southwest into the fertile basin of Fayoum Oasis, reaching the oasis in under two hours. Upon arrival, the day focuses on the archaeological heritage of the region, exploring museums, ancient cities, and Middle Kingdom monuments.

    Kom Aushim Museum

Originally established in 1974, the museum serves as an introduction to the history of Fayoum from prehistoric settlements through the Roman era. Exhibits include pottery, statues, tools, and funerary objects discovered throughout the oasis. Among the most notable artifacts connected to the region are the famous Fayoum Portraits, remarkable Greco-Roman funerary paintings known for their lifelike realism.

    Karanis

Karanis, once known as “The Lord’s Town,” is one of the largest surviving Greco-Roman settlements in Egypt. Founded in the third century BC under the Ptolemaic dynasty, the city was originally populated by soldiers and settlers of Ptolemy II’s army. Today the site reveals residential streets, granaries, and the remains of two temples that once served the community.

    Hawara Pyramid

Built during the 12th Dynasty by Pharaoh Amenemhat III, the Hawara Pyramid is one of the major monuments of the Middle Kingdom. Although much of its outer limestone casing was removed during the Roman period, the structure remains historically significant. The pyramid complex once included a vast mortuary temple known to ancient writers as the legendary labyrinth described by Herodotus.

Lunch is served at a local restaurant overlooking Lake Qarun during the tour.

In the afternoon, continue to the charming artisan community of Tunis Village overlooking Lake Qarun. Known for its pottery workshops and tranquil scenery, the village provides a relaxing base within the oasis landscape.

After the day’s exploration, transfer to your accommodation in Tunis Village for the evening.
